Between 2019 and 2020, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) ran a project on crop residue management under its Cleaner Air Better Life initiative. The programme ran in 102 villages across six districts in Punjab and Haryana; the programme’s objective was to scale cost-effective and actionable solutions with farming communities.
Last week, a report on learning from this programme was released. Key findings include:
- Through the programme, crop residue burning of rice reduced from 64% in 2018 to 24% in 2019-20.
- In-situ crop management also brought water savings of up to 13%.
- Avoided crop residue burning also meant lower emissions loads for particulate matter, black carbon and gases.
